Created by Italian design studio High Society, Senilia is a lamp shade collection that is made from the waste materials of beer and coffee production.
The lamp shades feature a tubular body that is contorted into five variations. A round light bulb is fitted at each end.
To create the lamp shades, coffee bean peels or hop and barley from breweries are processed into a powder before being mixed with a compostable binder and put through an extruder. The materials are then ejected under high-pressure through a pipe, creating a tubular shape that can be twisted and bent by hand into the final product. After air-drying for several days, the lamp shades solidify.
Made of ceramic, the light bulb holder is recyclable. The cable insulation is also recyclable as it is made of textile.
The purpose of Senilia is to explore all aspects of everchanging organic life.
“All living organisms obey natural laws and are as such subject to constant change,” said High Society. “As our body structure alters with time, in the same way, the wrinkled and bumped light shapes aim to reflect those alterations.”
Once the lamp shades have seen the end of their life, the tubular body can be recycled or biodegraded.
