One of the most wonderful aspects of driving are the awe-inspiring and breathtaking views that come along the road, but not all are fortunate enough to enjoy such a simple pleasure. For the visually impaired, the invaluable experience of sightseeing has unfortunately been long neglected.

In order to change this, Ford has developed a smart window called Feel The View that enables those who are blind or partially sighted to visualize the scenery with touch and sound.

Feel The View works by taking a picture of the landscape and converting it into a high-contrast monochrome image, which is then reproduced on the window glass using special LEDs. By touching the window, different shades of grey vibrate with a range of 255 intensities to help passengers visually rebuild the landscape in their mind. There is also an integrated vocal assistant that will help put the image into context by describing the view.

“We seek to make people’s lives better and this was a fantastic opportunity to help blind passengers experience a great aspect of driving,” said Ford Italy spokesman Marco Alù Saffi in a statement. “The technology is advanced, but the concept is simple – and could turn mundane journeys into truly memorable ones.”
