With the mission of creating the world’s lowest-impact sneakers, clothing retail company Everlane has debuted a leather trainer as part of the launch of their new sneaker brand called Tread.

Designed to last for years and be worn every day, the trainer is comprised of a recycled and natural rubber sole that is 94.2% free of virgin plastic, laces and linings made from recycled plastic bottles, and full-grain leather sourced from a Gold-Certified tannery.

“For the past five years, we’ve been asked one question more than any other: When are you going to launch a sneaker? For a long time our answer was clear: never. Flashy, hype-driven, disposable—sneakers have become the ultimate trend piece,” said Everlane founder and CEO Michael Preysman in a press release.

“Of everything we wear, sneakers have one of the heaviest footprints,” explained Preysman. “They require a ton of energy to produce, are made largely from virgin plastic, and never break down. So when we buy and replace them often—billions end up in landfills around the world. And the truth? Most people want a timeless sneaker they can wear for years. Not something they’ll have to replace next month.”

In partnership with NativeEnergy, the production emission costs of 51.5 kg CO₂e per each pair is 100% offset. To achieve this, support is provided to ranchers to improve cattle-grazing practices. By doing so, soil health is increased, waterways are cleaned, and greater carbon sequestration into the soil is achieved.

“The Trainer is just our first step,” said Tread. “We’re working every day to further reduce our impact. From cutting out all virgin plastic to—one day—fully closing our production loop. It won’t be easy. But things worth doing rarely are.”

The trainer is priced at $98 and is available in seven colours.
