Founded in 2014, UK-based clothing brand Birdsong has been on a mission to create beautiful and ethical pieces for women, by women.
With the rapid growth of fast fashion, there have been revelations about the darker side of the industry, where an estimated 60 million women worldwide earn less than minimum wage. Birdsong however is an antidote, paying skilled female workers who face barriers to employment, the London living wage.
Birdsong’s pledge to empower women goes even further with their ‘all bodies are good bodies’ motto. In protest of the countless adverts featuring thin, airbrushed women, the clothing brand promises no Photoshop, leaving the diverse group of friends and activists who model for them just as they are.
In keeping with their goal of catering to all women, Birdsong offer sizes six to 24, and are hoping to extend this even further to size 30.
Birdsong ensures guilt-free shopping as their spring collection utilizes TENCEL fabric made from sustainable wood pulp, which is then printed with eco pigments. Furthermore, to solve the waste issue that the fashion industry is facing, all Birdsong’s garments are made to order.
The overarching mission of this brand is simple – it’s all about female empowerment, whether that’s from paying workers a fair wage, featuring a diverse range of models, to creating clothes that promote comfort and confidence. As stated on the brand’s Instagram page, wearing the collection “is a protest in itself – against the fast nature of the fashion industry, against the obsessive pursuit of trends and against the systematic abuse of women in the production line.
