Founded by fashion designer Emilie Pittman, Em&May is a Montreal-based clothing brand whose main pillar is sustainability.
Made from organic and deadstock materials, Em&May’s clothing line has many classic pieces that are meant to last in your wardrobe. Avoiding fast fashion trends is important because it goes against fueling mass consumption.
“So then the person who buys this super trendy moment piece might not wear it in a year and we’re trying to reduce waste, so if we just keep taking the exact trends that are happening we’re still hopping into that cycle,” says Pittman.
Sustainability continues with their made-to-order business model by only buying what they need for the orders they receive. Em&May also offers custom sizing to be more inclusive to their customers.
When a customer receives their package, it too is recyclable from the box, stickers, tags, paper, tape, and even the ink. Pittman thinks ahead for the customer and says it is easier for them to put the materials into a recycling bin than try to figure out how to dispose of a compostable mailer that may take years to break down. She also says in the next couple of years Em&May is going to look at how they can reduce their paper consumption.
