In a speech to the Confederation of British Industry, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced that all new buildings constructed in England will be required to have electric vehicle charge points installed starting next year.
This announcement comes shortly after the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26), which was hosted in the UK. COP26 saw world leaders from various countries attend the summit to discuss and work towards achieving the goals set by the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
Thanks to the regulation, roughly 145,000 new charge points are expected to be installed throughout England each year.
In addition to new homes and non-residential buildings such as supermarkets and workplaces, locations undergoing largescale renovations with over 10 parking spaces will be required to install electric vehicle charge points.
“This is a pivotal moment – we cannot go on as we are. We have to adapt our economy to the green industrial revolution,” says Johnson.
