As more and more consumers turn towards environmentally friendly and sustainably driven brands, one area that is quickly catching up is hygiene products.

Enter UK-based sustainable sanitary products startup DAME co-founded by Celia Pool. With an aim in creating reusable pads that do not feel like a diaper or kids’ pyjamas, they have conceived a range of sanitary pads that are naturally soft, thin, and feel invisible.

According to DAME, 100 billion single-use period products are disposed of every year globally, enough to circle the planet 250 times, while using reusable pads could save up to 2,000 plastic disposables a year. By simply making the switch to reusable pads, one person can save more than 40x carbon emissions and up to 60% in costs.

To create its reusable pads, DAME uses natural materials including 100% organic cotton and Lyocell and forgoes any harmful chemicals, gels, and fragrances that can harm Mother Earth. DAME also omits any endocrine-disrupting chemicals that are frequently found in disposable sanitary products such as phthalates, bisphenols, and parabens. Moreover, these endocrine-disrupting chemicals can lead to cancerous tumours or fetal development issues.

The line of unique reusable pads comprises a panty liner and either a Regular or Night absorbency pad that features super-fast wicking. Using innovative DAMEdry technology, each pad can absorb 10 times its weight and instantly wicks away moisture with bamboo fibre, on top of preventing leaks. To remain odourless, all layers are infused with natural antimicrobials to help wearers feel fresh.

Each pad arrives with a Dry Bag, a roll-top airtight, watertight, and odour-tight carrying case, which allows wearers to dispose of their soiled pads without causing a mess or embarrassment. The Dry Bag additionally doubles up as a rinsing station by soaking the pads in water before placing them in the washing machine to clean. Although pre-soaking is not necessary, it helps to rinse the blood out of the pads so users can wash them in the same cycle as their clothing with no fear of contaminating the other items.

DAME’s eco-friendly and wallet-friendly reusable pads are available for pre-order online for $54 CAD per set, $17-$20 per additional pad (Regular/Night), and $15 per additional liner. A retail debut is expected in March of this year.
