Currently, a staggering 30 percent of the total landmass on Earth is allocated for livestock production and accounts for around 14 percent of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. As the human population is estimated to reach 9.1 billion by 2050, industrialized factory farming will inevitably become unsustainable due to the increased demands, lack of resources, and the environmental costs, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization report.
Here’s where a food manufacturing company called Just comes into the picture. By using cellular agriculture to grow cultured meat in a laboratory, factory-farmed meat now has a viable alternative in the form of an equally delicious, cruelty-free meat called Just Meat.
In order to grow meat in a lab, a sustainable, economical, animal-free and plant-based nutrient recipe is used to feed the animal fat and muscle cells to proliferates and grows to the point where it is made ready to cook and serve. A preliminary analysis report by Just indicates that by producing meat products using their process, it would significantly reduce foodborne illness, greenhouse gas emissions, land use, water use, and energy use when compared to the conventional industrialized farming techniques used today.
Just also produces another product called Just Egg, a plant-based scrambled eggs derived from a legume called mung. Packaged in a bottle, the plant-based eggs come in a liquid form. When cooked, it miraculously becomes scrambled eggs. Just says that the plant-based scrambled eggs taste identical to real scrambled eggs.
With the simple and honourable company mission to create a fair, honest and just food system for all human beings, it may not be such a radical idea that in the near future, people will be able to enjoy a cruelty-free steak that was grown in a laboratory.
