French fashion house Chloé recently debuted their ready-to-wear Resort 2022 collection, and thanks to new creative director Gabriela Hearst, it’s eco-friendly.
Ever since Hearst was appointed creative director of Chloé, fashion lovers everywhere knew there were going to be some changes in store, namely in regards to ethical and sustainable production.
And now, with the launch of Hearst’s second collection for Chloé, it’s clear that positive changes are underway.
55% of the materials in Chloé’s Resort 2022 collection are made from lower-impact materials. In addition, 15% of the collection was manufactured by the World Fair Trade Organization, in partnership with Made51, a UN refugee agency that supports fair working conditions and helps refugee women from Afghanistan preserve their textile heritage.
In collaboration with fashion veteran Adriano Goldschmied, Hearst designed several denim ready-to-wear pieces that feature mixed, upcycled constructions made from deadstock fabrics. Further, all the rinses were done by laser and all denim pieces were produced using technology that prioritized durability and longevity over all else.
Meanwhile, buttons were created from corozo, otherwise known as vegetable ivory, and the pockets were made from linen (part of Hearst’s effort to eliminate cotton). Chloé’s Resort 2022 collection currently has denim items available in eight fits and two washes.
Beyond denim, Hearst also designed her first sneaker for Chloé. It features playful stitching and best of all, a 25% recycled midsole.
Plus, as a way of weeding out cotton, a crop that Hearst says requires large amounts of water, pesticides, and insecticides to grow, she replaced the cotton linings of Chloé’s signature handbags with linen linings. Hearst also believes that the crops grown for fashion should have nutritional purposes, and cotton does not. Her aim is to move away from cotton as much as possible, and if necessary, only use deadstock or organic cotton.
Other environmentally-minded pieces in the new collection include a colourful poncho made from recycled cashmere, deadstock cotton eyelet dresses, and a dress top braided from strips of leftover fabric.
Rife with vibrant crochet, embroidery, and knitting reminiscent of the ‘70s, Chloé’s Resort 2022 collection is at-once bohemian, romantic, and environmentally friendly.
