Los Angeles-based company Canoo has developed an all-electric vehicle with multi-purpose functionality and customization capabilities.
Entitled MPDV (short for Multi-Purpose Delivery Vehicle), the price tag starts at $33,000 with scaled production and the official launch for the market scheduled in 2023.
There are two initial vehicle variants, each designed for a specific need. MPDV1’s space-efficient footprint is catered for urban spaces with improved range and mobility. MPDV2 offers a comfortable roof height of 6.5 ft (78 in) that is perfect for those such as delivery drivers who regularly step in and out of their vehicle. A third variant classified as a class 3 truck will also be launched eventually.
Based on Canoo’s proprietary EV platform powered by a permanent magnet synchronous electric motor with peak motor torque of 236 lb-ft and 200 horsepower, MPDV comes in three battery sizes of 40, 60, and 80 kWh.
With an 80 kWh battery, the MPDV1’s total payload is 1540 lbs (698 kg). MPDV2 with the same battery can carry a reduced 1320 lbs (598 kg). The estimated WLTP range of MPDV1 fitted with an 80 kWh battery is 482 km (300 mi), while the MPDV2’s WLTP range is 402 km (250 mi).
The 80 kWh battery is capable of a DC Fast Charging time from 20% to an 80% charge in roughly 28 minutes.
“We created our multi-purpose delivery vehicle from the inside out, with the ergonomics of the driver in mind and with attention to detail to help them be happier and more productive at work,” said Tony Aquila, executive chairman of Canoo. “The vehicle is affordable and offers greater cargo capacity than the current electric delivery offerings in its class. We aim to lower the total cost of ownership and increase return on investment for everyone from local small business owners to large fleets.”
