In honour of Earth Day, British fashion house Burberry has announced new efforts towards a more sustainable future.

The first is the introduction of clothing tags that list an item’s sustainable credentials. The pistachio-coloured tags are the brand’s efforts to show consumers that they are meeting sustainability requirements.

“By inviting customers to learn more about the sustainable credentials of our products through our labeling program, we are helping them to better understand our initiatives and breadth of the ambition of our responsibility agenda,” shares Pam Batty, vice president of corporate responsibility at Burberry.

Each label will list the sustainable elements of the garment, as well as outline how it has met the sustainable “positive attributes” criteria set by the brand.

Currently, the tags are only featured on a selection of Burberry products spanning menswear, womenswear, and accessories. However, the company hopes that by October of this year, all Burberry items will have green tags.

The launch of these new clothing tags coincides with Burberry’s second announcement made on Earth Day, the release of an eco-friendly capsule collection called ReBurberry Edit.

The ReBurberry Edit, which includes many of the brand’s best-selling spring/summer 2020 items, contains just 26 pieces, all of which are made with sustainable materials.

One of these materials is Econyl, a kind of sustainable nylon yarn derived from regenerated fishing nets, discarded fabric, and industrial plastic. They have also started producing garments that use bio-based nylon made from canola oil and polyester made from recycled water bottles. Burberry also now sells sustainable sunglasses that use bio-based acetate.

In addition to the fabrics used for clothes, Burberry has also committed itself to eliminating single-use plastics, which is why all items in the collection will be packaged in garment bags made out of 100% recycled polyester. They also redesigned their shopping bags, which are now made out of oak paper, with a minimum of 40 percent being derived from upcycled coffee cups.

The ReBurberry Edit is made up of menswear, womenswear, and accessories, including a branded graphic tote bag, recycled jackets in the brand’s iconic check pattern, and of course, a trench coat.

Burberry’s new eco-friendly initiative is one step towards achieving its sustainability goals as outlined in 2019. By 2022, the British brand hopes to be carbon neutral and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 95 percent.
