Situated in Seoul‘s trendy and stylish Seongsu neighbourhood, Blue Bottle Coffee Seongsu Cafe designed by Schemata Architects reflects the local architecture and history with the use of red bricks.
Previously an industrial area with numerous factories, Seongsu has since become what Blue Bottle Coffee refers to as the “Brooklyn of Seoul” where cafes and galleries now call home. With many buildings in Seongsu constructed with red bricks and finished with brick tiles, Schemata Architects out of “respect for the history”, decided to use the red bricks to create pieces of furniture.
The cafe is in the double heightened basement, while the roastery and coffee beans storage room is on the first floor. Featuring glass walls, visitors can observe the preparation of coffee from start to finish.
Due to the building located next to a major road leading to the centre of Seoul, Schemata Architects explains that the cafe was placed in the basement as “heavy traffic and the view from inside is not very pleasant”.
“The cafe in the basement provides a calm and peaceful space away from the bustle on the ground,” added Schemata Architects.
