Located near Sangenjaya station in Tokyo, Japan, Blue Bottle Coffee Sangenjaya Cafe is tucked between a bustling shopping street and quiet residential neighbourhood.

Designed by Schemata Architects, the cafe resides in a former residence and clinic. Rather than constructing a new commercial building or an apartment building on the site, Schemata Architects decided to renovate the building to “create a place loved by the community residents and generate new activities for the community”.

Upon entering the cafe, there is a drip-bar followed by a seating area. There is also a garden in the back.

The cafe’s rough concrete is described by Blue Bottle Coffee founder James Freeman as evoking the feeling of Pierre Boulez’s composition titled Esprit rude/Esprit doux.
