California-based beauty brand Beautycounter has released The Clean Deo, a refillable deodorant that is made from eco-friendly, natural ingredients.
Beautycounter made sure to formulate this new product offering without any of the ingredients on the brand’s 1,800-item-long “never list” that includes everything from parabens to synthetic fragrances. Instead, each of The Clean Deo’s three signature scents – Fresh Coconut, Soft Lavender, and Clean Rose – get their fragrance from a mix of essential oils, including geranium and pink peppercorn, and aromatic natural materials, such as vanillin and raspberry ketone.
Featured ingredients in The Clean Deo are non-GMO cornstarch and baking soda, coconut oil, shea butter, candelilla wax, and beeswax. All of these ingredients come together to moisturize, nourish, hydrate, and condition the skin, all while neutralizing body odour and absorbing wetness.
In addition, The Clean Deo is cruelty-free and aluminum-free (a common ingredient found in deodorant that has been linked to breast cancer among women).
Best of all, The Clean Deo is a refillable product, the first of its kind to be offered by Beautycounter. The Clean Deo Refill is available in all three signature scents, and the brand claims that purchasing their refill rather than a brand new deodorant will reduce carbon emissions by 47% – not to mention reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills.
Plus, refilling The Clean Deo is extremely simple. All the consumer has to do is pop the used deodorant out of the bottom compartment and then snap the new one in. The part of the old deodorant that has been used can then be recycled, as Beautycounter made sure that the product was fully recyclable (in fact, they spent five years tinkering with it to ensure it could be easily tossed in the recycling bin after use).
The Clean Deo has been launched at a time when Beautycounter is making considerable efforts to ramp up its sustainable product offerings. For example, the American beauty brand recently introduced a “less is more” approach to their packaging.
This past summer, they launched a new sustainable shipper that uses 30% less material (thus resulting in 30% less waste) than traditional boxes. They also started using glass over plastic for their product packaging, when possible, and partnered with How2Recycle to provide their consumers with clear instructions on how to properly recycle or dispose of each Beautycounter product.
The Clean Deo is available now on Beautycounter’s website and retails for $37 CAD ($28 USD). The refill is $24 CAD ($18 USD).
