In collaboration with sportswear company adidas, sustainable footwear company Allbirds has created a running shoe that they say is their lowest carbon footprint to date.
As the name implies, the Adizero x Allbirds 2.94 kg CO2e runner has a carbon footprint of 2.94 kg CO2 a pair.
“Adizero x Allbirds 2.94 kg CO2e is very low carbon because we first honed in on the carbon intensive phases of the shoe’s lifecycle—materials and manufacturing,” explains Allbirds. “We avoided petroleum-based and virgin materials wherever possible, embraced natural and recycled materials, and utilized low carbon manufacturing technologies.”
In regards to materials, the runner’s upper is made from responsibly sourced eucalyptus tree fibre and adidas PRIMEGREEN (high-performance recycled polyester), while the midsole is sugarcane-based EVA SweetFoam and adidas Lightstrike EVA (super-light compression-moulded EVA). In addition, the lining is recycled polyester embroidery.
Priced at $120 USD, the Adizero x Allbirds 2.94 kg CO2e is available in a limited edition Semi Turbo colourway.
