Designed by Tacklebox Architecture led by Jeremy Barbour, Aesop‘s store located in the Upper West Side of New York City honours the history of the neighbourhood and building with the preservation of the previous tenant’s graphic signage.
The previous tenant was a family-run dry cleaner called Anel French Cleaners. Tacklebox Architecture says that when Anel’s owners decided to retire, Aesop was hand-picked to “reimagine their space”.
“Nodding to trusted communal establishments such as the barbershop, salon and laundry, Aesop Upper West Side safeguards the residential tradition of interstitial sites where public meets private,” said Tacklebox Architecture. “Extending the legacy of Anel, it offers a fresh space for the ritual of personal maintenance, restoration, and renewal.”
The 700 sq ft (65 sq m) interior features Aesop’s distinct touch combined with the heritage of Anel French Cleaners that is translated through the use of materials and form.
Along the walls are milled pine plywood strips that extend outwards in certain spots to create a floating shelf. As to reflect on the former dry cleaner that occupied the space, the shelves are shaped to resemble upturned coat hangers.
Across from the wooden shelves is a white wall with metal shelves. A freestanding vintage basin with exposed pipes is present so that customers can test Aesop’s skincare, hair and fragrance products.
