Brother Vellies is all about footwear and handbags that incorporate traditional African designs. The Brooklyn-based brand, founded by Toronto native Aurora James, had had the same mission since the beginning: to “create luxury accessories that celebrate cultural histories and timeless design.”
James, who serves as creative director, launched Brother Vellies in 2013 and since then, it has grown to be one of the most unique accessories brands in the industry.
First, all Brother Vellies pieces are handmade by artisans from around the world. Currently, the brand works with a team of global artisans hailing from Nairobi to New York.
Given that they seek to incorporate distinct African designs into their pieces, many of the artisans they work with are located in African countries, including Morocco, South Africa, Ethiopia, Burkina Faso, and Kenya. Brother Vellies has also partnered with artisans from Mexico, Italy, Haiti, and the brand’s home base, New York City.
When it comes to sustainability, eco-friendly materials are used. These materials are wide-ranging and include everything from vegetable-tanned leathers and recycled tires to hand-carved wood and floral dyed feathers, as well as other by-product materials sourced from farmers around the world. In addition to the materials they use, the brand aims to reduce its environmental impact through its production practices.
“We strive to lessen the impact of our production practices by continuing to ask questions and make changes each season. We put a lot of thought into what we make for you and we wouldn’t have it any other way,” reads Brother Vellies’ sustainability webpage.
