Puffer jackets are the outerwear of choice for 2021. However, many puffer style jackets are made from virgin synthetic materials such as nylon and polyester – both derived from plastic. These styles are also often filled with real down feathers which are not ethically sourced or vegan friendly.

Make a sustainable choice for the planet and wrap up in one of these five eco-conscious puffer jackets instead.

Frank and Oak Highland Puffer

Frank and Oak is a Canadian brand committed to the fight against climate change and strives to adopt ethical practices throughout the business. They are transparent with their processes and have clearly outlined the sustainability goals they are currently working towards.

The Long Highland puffer is made from fully recycled materials, including its recycled polyester filling, lining, zipper tape and label – it can also keep you cozy in temperatures of -25° C.

Allbirds Trino Puffer

Allbirds‘ Trino puffer jacket stands out for all the right reasons. Lightweight and weather-resistant, the puffer is made from a combination of recycled and sustainably produced materials with a natural recycled filling.

Available for both men and women in a selection of colours, its carbon footprint comes in at 20.9kg C02e, which will be offset by the brand for a carbon-neutral purchase.

Nanushka HIDE Puffer Jacket

One for the fashion lovers, European brand Nanushka combines functionality with style. Their vegan leather puffer jackets are often spotted on Instagram feeds and street style shots; but it’s their focus on sustainability that sets them apart from the competition.

The HIDE jacket is made from soft vegan leather and comes in black, cream or red. It is also locally made within 300KM of Nanushka’s head office, keeping CO2 emissions to a minimum.

The North Face Saikuru Jacket

These days, even the biggest names in outdoor wear are factoring sustainability into their designs. The North Face is making a conscious effort to increase the amount of recycled polyester used in their garments by repurposing old plastic bottles. They also have drop off points in their stores and outlets for customers to donate unwanted clothing which will then be reused or recycled into raw materials.

The Saikuru jacket is an example of one of their designs which is made from recycled polyester and insulated with a recycled synthetic filling – all without compromising on the quality expected from The North Face.

Pangaia FLWRDOWN Oversized Jacket

Pangaia is an eco-friendly loungewear brand that has gone from strength to strength during the pandemic. Originally known for its rainbow-hued recycled cotton tracksuits, the label is now expanding its offerings to include outerwear.

Their colourful puffer jackets are filled with FLWRDWN, a biodegradable down-fill made from wildflowers and biopolymer.  For every Pangaia product purchased, the brand will also plant, protect or restore a tree.
