In October 2019, fashion brand ZARA collaborated with the 2019 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalists to create eco-friendly looks that were constructed entirely out of recycled ZARA fabrics and upcycled vintage pieces.

To continue its partnership with the Council of Fashion Designers in America (CFDA), ZARA is spotlighting four finalists in a new limited-edition sustainable collection. The eco-friendly and sustainable range comprises nine timeless garments that can easily be styled for any season.

Among the chosen four CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalists are New York-based Barragán, Private Policy, and Abasi Rosborough, as well as Spanish label Alejandra Alonso Rojas. Each label eloquently merged its own aesthetics with that of ZARA’s offerings.

The upcycled vintage pieces were created using old fabrics from ZARA’s Join Life collections, while new garments were crafted from materials and processes approved by ZARA’s Join Life standards, the brand’s mark of sustainability.

Mexican designer Victor Barragán designed an asymmetrical patchwork trench coat created with naturally grown linen sourced from crops free from artificial irrigation and genetically modified seeds.

Additionally, the crops are certified by the European Flax standard of the non-profit European Confederation of Flax and Hemp, ensuring a low impact on soil, along with environmental biodiversity and freshwater resources. Private Policy also used the same textile to design its bubblegum pink, flower-embroidered blazer and skirted three-piece suit.

Abasi Rosborough — helmed by Abdul Abasi and Greg Rosborough — offers up a statement-making bold red suit accented with contrasting black stripes and an ornate bird appliqué on the back. Here the duo used ecologically grown cotton, while the fabrics were created using natural fertilizers and ecological growth.

Completing the range is Madrid’s Alejandra Alonso Rojas’s selection of tie-dye essentials, such as a Kimono gown and slip dress, made with Join Life viscose – a wood-sourced fibre from sustainably managed forests, which ensures controlled tree growth and guaranteed reforestation.
