With the goal of reducing commute time, Uber has announced uberAIR, a transportation service network that will use electrically powered, zero operation emission, vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) quadcopters to fly commuters to and from their destination.
For those who are unfamiliar, Uber is a company that enables commuters to hire on-demand private drivers with thier smartphone app at a relatively low cost. Uber also has a food delivery service app called Uber Eats.
According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Energy Information Association, about 86 percent of US workers commute to their jobs by car every day and spend roughly 51 minutes commuting to and from their jobs. Along with the long commute times, an astonishing 42 hours is wasted every year idling in traffic congestion and gridlock.
In order to take transportation to the next level, Uber has decided to incorporate on-demand air travel to their app. By utilizing unused spaces such as rooftops and open lots, uberAIR plans to build takeoff, landing, and charging infrastructure in and around the city and is set to operate uberAIR in Dallas and Los Angeles as the first cities to offer uberAIR flights.
uberAIR is projected to begin operational demonstrator flights starting 2020 and will begin commercial operations in 2023.
