To celebrate the 50th Earth Day, iconic American fashion brand Tommy Hilfiger is making a commitment to producing items that are more environmentally-friendly.
One example of this? Using 100% recycled denim. Denim styles that come from 100% recycled materials are featured in the brand’s spring/summer 2020 collection. The innovative process of creating an item of clothing completely out of recycled denim includes blending discarded cotton scraps found on the floors of factories with old bed linens sourced from hotels. Owing to the use of these materials, the process of creating the denim requires far less water and energy to produce. In addition to the materials used, the thread used to stitch the denim also comes from recycled plastic bottles.
An official press release from Tommy Hilfiger reads: “At Tommy Hilfiger, we’re committed to making fashion that wastes nothing and welcomes all. As part of this commitment, we are shaping a circular fashion brand—one which limits its carbon and water footprints, and where all the materials we use are part of a sustainable loop.”
Tommy Hilfiger jeans, jackets, overalls, and more have all been made using 100% recycled denim for the spring/summer 2020 collection. Given that the brand is known for its jeans, you can rest assured that you will be able to find many different styles of jeans in the eco-friendly line. Such styles include skinny, crop flare, mom jeans, and straight leg. The collection also features a cropped jacket, a long-sleeved midi dress, and short overalls, all of which are made from recycled denim.
In addition to 100% recycled denim, Tommy Hilfiger has begun producing 100% organic cotton pieces and 100% recycled polyester pieces. The organic cotton used by the brand is free from chemical pesticides, fertilizers, and genetically modified seeds. It is also bought from certified independent suppliers. Meanwhile, the recycled polyester is derived from textiles, manufacturing waste, and plastic bottles.
Finally, the brand not only has actionable plans for sustainability now but also for the future. By 2030, Tommy Hilfiger plans to create fully circular products (i.e. all of the materials they use will be part of a sustainable loop), and “operate with sensitivity to planetary boundaries”.
