Why buy animal leather products which are known to be environmentally costly and cruel when you can opt for a plant-based leather alternative? Offering an accessory collection made entirely from cactus leather is fashion brand Everlane.
To be specific, the cactus leather collection, which includes totes, hobos, and sling bags, is made from organically sourced prickly pear cactus-derived Desserto textile, Everlane’s first plant-based material that was used as a leather alternative.
According to Everlane, cactus was chosen for its zero irrigation growth, CO2 sequestering capacity properties, ability to naturally regenerate soil, and act as a natural carbon sink. The fashion brand says that 50% of the agricultural cactus byproduct is redirected to be used to feed livestock.
