The New Raw

Rotterdam-based design studio The New Raw has created a 3D printed furniture showpiece made from plastic waste for online supermarket company Picnic.

Said to be inspired by geological stratification, the oversized and multifunctional furniture piece called Stratum is intended to invigorate the entrance area of Picnic’s new office building in Utrecht, The Netherlands. Not only is Stratum for sitting, but it also serves as a work desk.

According to The New Raw, the Stratum measures 18m long and is the studio’s biggest monolithic piece created to date.

“Playing and interacting with Stratum stimulates the senses and creates engagement with others. Materiality is an important factor in our research as it plays an important role in our mental, visual, and physical perception of a space. In this case, Stratum enhances the character and the functionalities of an ordinary entrance hall and at the same time, instils a sense of familiarity, putting visitors at ease,” explain Panos Sakkas and Foteini Setaki, co-founders of The New Raw studio.
