Located in San Francisco’s SoMa district, there is a restaurant serving $6 burgers made by an automated burger making machine.

Developed by a culinary robotics company called Creator, the machine is made up of 20 computers, 350 sensors and 50 actuator mechanisms that enable it to slice and toast brioche buns, grind meat, sear patties, add toppings, and create a burger from start to finish, all without the help of human hands.

“A healthy amount of obsession, experimentation and love went into creating a whole new kind of hamburger, one that’s never existed before,” said Creator. “Every burger is created with freshly ground beef that’s aligned perfectly to your bite — a new kind of tenderness. We grind, slice, grate, toast, season, grill and customize a burger that’s fast, fresh, delicious and unforgettable.”

Alex Vardakostas, the founder and CEO of Creator, initially began his culinary career at the age of 15 by flipping innumerable patties at his family restaurant. After getting his degree in physics at the University of California, he saw automation as a viable and efficient way to create delicious food and by partnering with engineers, culinary scientists, human-centred designers and machinists, developed what they refer to as a “culinary instrument”.

By automating the process of creating burgers, Creator intends to increase both profitability and the quality of their ingredients found in their burgers while also improving customer service and the well-being of their employees.

With repetitive tasks such as flipping burgers assigned to the automated machine, there is less of a need for kitchen staff and this allows employees to focus on more important tasks such as taking orders and offering hospitality.
