Located in Louisiana, USA, the Holy Rosary Complex is composed of an oratory, administrative and religious education building.
Designed by Trahan Architects, the complex is said to be an “honest exploration of form, function, light and materials that results in an engaging and profound study in sacred space”.
Made from a cast in place concrete cube with a rotated cubic void nested within, the Holy Rosary Chapel feature openings carved in the wall that pour light in through the glass. Described as a thoughtful meditation on sacred spaces and the spatial embodiment of spiritual experiences, Trahan Architects states that the light gives occupants a sense of orientation and is “symbolic of the paschal mystery of Christ”.
“Secular components of the campus occupy the edges and frame a courtyard – the sacred space in which the oratory is located. The oratory, or chapel, is skewed to create a sense of expectation and further underscore its importance,” said Trahan Architects. “The oratory is a cube with all sides equal in size, color and texture, resulting in an interior space that feels pure, encompassing, protective and mysterious.”
