Based in Sweden, Volta Trucks is a company founded by Carl-Magnus Norden that is currently developing an all-electric truck for “today’s cities and tomorrow’s generations”.

According to Transport for London, HGVs (heavy goods vehicles) during the years 2014 and 2015 were responsible for 23% of pedestrian and 58% of cyclist deaths in London despite only making up 4% of road miles driven. The fatalities are largely attributed to driver blind spots and dooring accidents.

In addition, Volta Trucks states that the average HGV is poorly constructed. “Drivers are exposed to constant noise, vibrations and fumes, and knee or hip injuries as well as accidents from falling is common due to the unsafe climbing in and out of the truck,” said Volta Trucks.

By developing an all-electric truck, a whole new design concept can be employed. Without the need for a combustion engine, the truck can be lowered to the ground. In doing so, drivers are not required to climb in and jump off the truck. In addition, a more natural field of direct vision for humans can be experienced.

The driver seat and steering wheel are also located in the centre of the truck, resulting in an improved field of direct vision.

With doors that slide open rather than swing open, the probability for a dooring accident is effectively eliminated.

Taking blind spots into account, the truck is fitted with numerous sensors and cameras.
