London fashion label Teatum Jones has just released their 2022 collection and it’s entirely made of repurposed materials.
The brand has been on a zero-waste mission for some time now and this latest collection is a pure iteration of that.
Dubbed Re-Love: the Global Womanhood 2022 Collection, it recently made its debut at Copenhagen Fashion Week as part of the Zalando Sustainability Award showcase.
For its 2022 Global Womanhood Collection, the London-based brand chose to create the line exclusively out of deadstock and imperfect materials. For example, some of the fabric was sourced from Teatum Jones’ own archival stock, while others were “imperfect and forgotten” Liberty Fabrics and even damaged tailoring fabrics collected from British woollen mills.
Working with Liberty Fabrics, the UK label selected materials from their archives, which according to the brand had been sitting in their Italian warehouses since the start of the pandemic. In the end, Teatum Jones selected 12 deadstock fabrics, including three iconic Liberty prints: Ceremony, Sussex, and Standen.
According to Teatum Jones’ website, Re-Love is centred on three principles: being zero waste, working with deadstock fabric, and innovating waste textiles. Rather than creating “new” items, the label is refocusing its efforts on the development of sustainable and ethical products, honouring its commitment to taking a slower approach to fashion.
The result was a collection of bold and vibrant designs in hues of fuchsia, cobalt blue, deep purple, scarlet red, and metallics. Teatum Jones’ Re-Love line largely consists of midi dresses, maxi skirts, tailored pantsuits, and statement outerwear, each adorned with bright colours and funky patterns.
All pieces are designed in a patchwork style, one of the most effective methods of utilizing deadstock fabric and ensuring minimal waste. Plus, it means that each piece is handcrafted and wholly unique. Further, Teatum Jones ensured that all pieces in its Re-Love 2022 Collection were produced within a 9-mile radius of its London studio.
The Re-Love Global Womanhood 2022 Collection was also said to take inspiration from 25 women, diverse in age, ethnicity, and socioeconomic background. For example, Teatum Jones claims the line was inspired by trans model Munroe Bergdorf, disability model and activist Kelly Knox, professor of Diverse Selfhood and former I-D editor Caryn Franklin, and Libyan textile designer Nawal Gebreel, among others.
To top it off, alongside the launch of the collection, Teatum Jones announced its partnership with Mary Portas’ Mary’s Living and Giving for Save the Children UK.
Through this partnership, Teatum Jones carefully selected vintage denim pieces from Mary’s Living and Giving archive, and then hand-embellished them in the brand’s London studio using oversized waste material from their factory and sampling room floor, as well as Liberty’s zero waste textiles. As the embellishments are all hand-placed and hand-fixed, the pieces are not only zero waste but also one-of-a-kind.
