When MrBeast (Jimmy Donaldson) hit 20 million subscribers on YouTube, his audience proposed an ambitious undertaking of planting 20 million trees in celebration of the momentous milestone.

Emboldened, MrBeast partnered with former NASA engineer and YouTuber Mark Rober to plan and organize a campaign that aimed to plant one tree for every dollar donated. After roughly five months of developing, the #TeamTrees campaign was launched on October 25th with a donation goal of $20 million.

With both MrBeast and Rober publishing a promotional video on the day of launch, #TeamTrees achieved virality on the internet, with many enthusiastic and supportive of the campaign.

Some of the biggest donors include Shopify CEO Tobi Lutke, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki and Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey.

On December 19th, the #TeamTrees campaign raised its donation goal of $20 million. In celebration, MrBeast tweeted, “We did it!! Thank you so much to the over 500,000 different people that donated and the hundreds of influential people that promoted the campaign! Teamtrees was more than planting 20 million trees, it was a movement that shows we care and we want to make change.”

The $20 million will fund the Arbor Day Foundation, a nonprofit conservation and education organization dedicated to planting trees.

The trees itself will be planted all around the globe in areas of great need. The planting of the 20 million trees will begin in January 2020 and is estimated to be finished by December 2022.
