Whether from the sun’s ultraviolet rays, harsh pollutants or blue light from daily screen usage, it is essential to protect our skin every day. As the UV indices consistently display a 10 – indicating a very high risk of harm from unprotected sun exposure – the sun’s potential to damage our skin becomes significantly higher during the summer months.
Supergoop, a brand founded by Holly Thaggard, aims to ensure that its consumers not only use sunscreen “Every Single Day” but also understand it’s overall importance. By offering a range of products suitable for all skin types, they make SPF wear practical and simple. From their Matte Screen to their Daily Moisturizer with SPF 40, they provide over 40 products that protect against the damaging effects of the sun.
As stated by Thaggard, the company’s message has been clear since its conception: “I started this brand not as a product, but as a movement, with the goal that everyone, everywhere, every day, would learn the importance of keeping their skin safe through SPF.” While maintaining clean, conscious and reef-safe development, she actively advocates for the advantages of sunscreen.
Although the benefits of daily SPF use have been scrutinized for several years, dermatologists and researchers continue to argue in its favour. Despite the sun’s supplementation of vitamin D, the intense UV radiation, which it gives off, is one of the main causes of skin cancer. Since scientists have proven that sunscreen can effectively prevent squamous skin cell and basal cell carcinoma, it is surprising that it is often under prioritized as part of our daily routines.
While adults are primarily diagnosed with skin cancer, it can develop chronically. This means that you may experience carcinogenic exposure for several years before first noticing a new foreign spot on your body. For this reason, Thaggard understands that prevention is key and believes that the best way to promote sunscreen usage is to start at a young age.
Supergoop’s initiative, Ounce by Ounce, focuses on this effort. Its central aim is to supply and stock elementary schools across the United States with sufficient sunscreen.
By donating several bottles of their unique formula, they allow children to remain protected from the sun, while not irritating their skin or exposing them to parabens or other chemicals. Currently working in New York, Illinois, Florida and a few other states, a faculty member can simply complete the online application in order to qualify.
Through this mission, Supergoop upholds it’s central message while instilling the importance of SPF protection in a younger audience.
