Studio ThusThat

Aluminum, the holy grail of materials. Highly durable, cheap and infinitely recyclable. In fact, roughly 75 percent of all aluminum ever produced in history is still used today, according to The Aluminum Association.

The darker side of aluminum is bauxite residue, a production byproduct. Also known as red mud, over 150 million tonnes are generated each year and simply dumped in pits. Taking this byproduct residue and turning it into ceramics and glazes is Studio ThusThat.

As part of their project entitled Red Mud, Studio ThusThat examines and reinterprets the notion of waste. Noting how there is a finite amount of resources on Earth, the project showcases the potential and value for what is considered to be a waste material.
