As part of its aspiration to become a “resource positive company,” coffeehouse chain Starbucks has announced that single-use plastic cups will be a thing of the past.

Instead, reusable cup programs will be implemented to allow customers to order their favourite drink without the necessary waste. Starbucks says that its reusable cup programs will help achieve the company’s goal of reducing waste by 50% by 2030.

“We have a bold long-term sustainability vision and ambitious goals for 2030,” says Kevin Johnson, Starbucks president and CEO. “Starbucks partners around the world are passionate about protecting our planet and are at the very center of driving the innovation that enables us to give more than we take from the planet.”

In a press release, Starbucks states that customers in the U.S. and Canada will be able to use their own reusable cups by the end of next year.
“Our goal, by 2025, is to create a cultural movement towards reusables by giving customers easy access to a personal or Starbucks provided reusable to-go cup for every visit, making it convenient and delightful to reuse wherever customers are enjoying their Starbucks Experience,” adds the coffeehouse chain.
