Sony‘s newest iteration of the aibo robot dog incorporates artificial intelligence into its design, enabling the robot dog to develop a personality, learn tricks, recognize people’s faces and create bonds with its respective owners.

In terms of build and design, an ultracompact 1- and 2-axis actuators developed by Sony gives aibo 22 axes of movements so that it can dynamically and smoothly operate. Using its tail, ears, voice sounds, and the OLEDs embedded in its eyes, aibo can express a wide variety of emotions through body language.

Utilizing deep learning technology and embedded sensors, aibo can detect words, recognize facial expressions and become aware of its environment over time.

Able to upload its experiences and interactions to Sony’s AI Cloud, aibo will access the database of memories accumulated to develop a unique personality so that it can form a tailored connection with its owners.

Costing $2,899.99 USD, buyers of the aibo First Litter Edition will receive aibo, pink ball, aibone, paw pads, charging station, 3 year AI cloud service, certificate of adoption, and an individually numbered commemorative dog tag.

Sony has also developed an app called My aibo that enables owners of an aibo to access system settings, view the images aibo took with its camera, and teach additional tricks.

Made available for purchase in the U.S. on September 18th, 2018, aibo can now be ordered through Sony’s website and is set to begin shipping on December 2018.
