Los Angeles fashion label Reformation has just launched its first-ever activewear collection – and it’s sustainable.
Dubbed Ref Active, the new line features everything from cropped tanks and bike shorts to sports bras and leggings, all made out of eco-friendly materials.
Two types of fabric in particular were used to create the bulk of the collection. The first is EcoMove, a performance material intended for high-impact activities, such as running or spinning. EcoMove is described as soft, shiny, and supportive. The second is EcoStretch, which has a soft, luxurious feel and is designed for low-impact activities, such as yoga, or everyday casual wear.
Both fabrics are made out of Repreve, which is an innovative material that uses 100% post-consumer recycled plastic water bottles. In addition, Repreve is a fully traceable material, from its beginnings as raw materials to when it is spun into yarn, all the way to when it is a finished product. Further, Reformation claims that producing their patented Ref Active fabrics out of Repreve uses 45% less energy, 20% less water, and produces 30% less greenhouse gas emissions than virgin polyester.
In fact, the web page for each piece in Reformation’s new Ref Active collection lists its sustainability impact, detailing exactly how much carbon dioxide, water, and waste was saved in the creation of it. For example, the Ivy EcoStretch Cropped Tank saved nine pounds of carbon dioxide and 30 gallons of water, while the EcoMove High Rise 7” Bike Short also saved nine pounds of carbon dioxide and 27 gallons of water.
Both fabrics featured in Reformation’s inaugural Ref Active line are Oeko-Tex certified, ensuring they have been tested and are free from any harmful chemical substances.
Currently, Ref Active styles are available in seven colourways, ranging from hot coral and neutral clay to pine green and lemon yellow. They also have plus-size options in several styles, such as the EcoStretch High Rise Legging Es.
Ref Active is available now on Reformation’s website, with prices ranging from $68 to $168 USD.
