Also called inkan, hanko is a seal that is used in Japan to sign contracts and paperwork.

Created by Toyota subsidiary DENSO WAVE, QR (Quick Response) code is a type of two-dimensional barcode that is scanned with a smartphone camera alongside a QR reader app to access information.

Combining a QR code with hanko, Yamazaki aimed to create a stamp that stored the online data of an individual.

“The concept is a stamp to connect the deceased person and the living person,” explained Yamazaki. “I proposed the problem of the way of data when SNS users died. Through the act of analog to data access. I deepened my thoughts about the meaning of the act of sealing.”
