There’s a new sustainable fashion brand in town. Paradis Perdus, which launched earlier this week, is a knitwear label led by French designer Thomas Poli.
Poli, who had previously worked as a product manager for a number of New York and Paris-based fashion labels, including Lanvin, Lacoste, and Mansur Gavriel, had seen first hand how wasteful the fashion industry was and how unaware most were regarding the environmental impact of clothing production. This is what inspired Poli to go off on his own and found a fashion brand that was part of the solution to the industry’s enormous carbon footprint, rather than part of the problem.
In fact, the brand’s inaugural collection is made entirely out of recycled materials.
Few people realize that over 75 percent of the fashion industry’s carbon footprint is linked to textile production. Thus, by exclusively using pre-existing fibres, Paradis Perdus is significantly reducing its environmental impact.
The process of creating Paradis Perdus’ very first collection involved Poli sorting through huge warehouses of cashmere sweaters to find the best colours and textures. From there, the sweaters were taken apart and spun into new yarns that would become the basis for the brand’s inaugural collection.
Paradis Perdus doesn’t shy away from transparency. In fact, every single item has a QR code on the garment tag that customers can scan to access a full rundown of the brand’s certifications.
The sweaters are certified by several different regulating bodies. These include Global Recycled Standard, which confirms an item’s recycled content, and REMOkey, which works to calculate how much carbon emissions, water, and energy a brand is saving through their sustainable production methods.
For the minimal carbon footprint Paradis Perdus still incurs, they have decided to offset these emissions through partnerships with 1% for the Planet and Carbonfund.org.
The knit sweaters in their inaugural collection are unisex and include nautical stripe and Fair Isle motifs in cheery shades of pink, violet, royal blue, and cherry red.
