Made up of a collection of scientists, technologists, and designers, PANGAIA is a fashion brand that creates garments using renewable, recyclable, sustainable, and bio-based materials.
With the stated goal of starting a movement “for a better now, for a better future”, materials such as wildflower down, seaweed-based fibres, recycled plastic and garment waste are utilized to create hoodies, T-shirts, jackets, and more.
PANGAIA’s T-shirt is made from biodegradable saltwater seaweed fibre and GOTS certified organic cotton. Treated with natural peppermint oil, PANGAIA says that it will help keep the garments fresh and by doing so, reduce water waste by up to 3000 litres over its lifetime when compared to a regular T-shirt.
Made of 100% post-consumer recycled garment waste and discarded plastic, PANGAIA’s hoodie is said to contain roughly 28 recycled plastic bottles.
Costing $900, the outer shell of PANGAIA’s puffer jacket is made of 100% post-consumer recycled materials and is filled with a material made from dried wildflowers called flowerdown. PANGAIA states that flowerdown is a cruelty-free and vegan alternative to goose down.
With every order, the garments will be packaged in a bio-based plastic alternative that biodegrades in roughly 24 weeks. 1 percent of all proceeds will also be donated to a non-profit organization called 5 Gyres that “empowers action against the global health crisis of plastic pollution through science, art, education, and adventure”.
