Organic Basics Introduces Low Impact Website to Reduce Carbon Emissions

Danish underwear brand Organic Basics has sustainability at its core. Not only are all products made using recycled, eco-friendly materials, but even the running of their website is done with the environment in mind.

Taking sustainability to a whole other level, Organic Basics recently introduced what they refer to as a “low impact website” in order to reduce carbon emissions. The reason for this? Organic Basics says that the internet is not eco-friendly. What they mean by this is that data transfer requires electricity, which creates carbon emissions, which in turn contributes to climate change. By operating on a low impact website, this reduces data transfer by up to 70 percent compared to a regular website.

There are a few different ways the low impact website is able to reduce data transfer. First, no website images are loaded before being actively requested by the user and they do not use videos of any kind. This, in turn, minimizes the power consumption on the user’s device. Further, the server’s carbon intensity adapts throughout the day to reflect the amount of renewable energy it’s running on. In addition, all data is stored locally on the user’s computer to minimize data transfer, and all data is compressed as much as possible.

The website only loads the most necessary programming scripts, frameworks, and cookies. It also limits and optimizes the use of custom fonts, as well as limits the amount of light emitted by the screen. Finally, Organic Basics is transparent when it comes to informing the user of the impacts of their browsing behaviour. For example, while reading the Low Impact Website webpage, there is a note at the bottom that states: “This page is using ~819kb of data (7.56x smaller than the regular front page)” and “Saved energy while browsing on this website: You’ve saved ~14.69g of CO2 so far this session.”

As alluded to above, Organic Basics’ low impact website is just one way that they are actively reducing their impact on the environment. Sustainability is more than just a goal for the Danish fashion brand, it’s a way of life. That is why they have taken several other steps to ensure that everything they produce does the least amount of environmental harm possible. 

First, they work with trusted, certified factory partners who share in their sustainable vision and they choose every single fabric based on two factors: its environmental footprint and its lifetime durability. The result? Their products are made entirely out of recycled, renewable, natural, biodegradable, and low impact textiles, such as recycled nylon, recycled wool, TENCEL Lyocell, SilverTech, Polygiene, and recycled cashmere. 

In an effort to further fight climate change, the brand created The Organic Basics Fund, whereby they donate a portion of their profits to grassroots activists and organizations that address the environmental crises before us. The fund is about “giving direct funding to people, groups and projects that address the problems at the root cause — and aim to create long-term, real impact,” reads Organic Basics’ website. Projects they’ve supported thus far include Amazon Watch (supporting communities in the Amazon rainforest), Green Kayak (cleaning up trash in local waterways around the world), and Danmarks Naturfredningsforening (restoring habitat for pollinators).
