As part of their commitment to achieving zero waste to landfills for all their direct operations, products, and packaging by 2025, Toronto-based pet food company Open Farm recently introduced a new mono-material packaging that is easily recyclable.

According to rePurpose Global, the pet food industry is estimated to produce roughly 300 million pounds of plastic waste annually just in the US. This is said to be due to the packaging being made from non-recyclable or hard-to-recycle materials, which has resulted in a staggering 99% of all pet food packaging being tossed rather than recycled.

By using mono-material for their packaging, which is the fancy way of saying it’s made from just one material rather than multiple, Open Farm has streamlined the recycling process.

“We’ve started our Zero Waste to Landfill journey so that all our bags, pouches, and bottles are optimized for recycling systems in the US and Canada by 2025,” says Open Farm. “So every time you choose to feed an Open Farm recipe, together we are making a measurable difference to minimize our waste footprint.”
