With the goal of realizing a future free from single-use plastics, London-based startup Skipping Rocks Lab is creating seaweed-based packaging called Ooho that is biodegradable and edible.
Cheaper than plastic to produce, the spherical packaging can encapsulate liquids such as water, soft drinks, alcohol, and more.
“The consumption of non-renewable resources for single use bottles and the amount of waste generated is profoundly unsustainable,” said Skipping Rocks Lab. “The aim of Ooho is to provide the convenience of plastic bottles while limiting the environmental impact.”
To create Ooho, an ice ball is placed into a mixture of brown algae and calcium chloride to form a membrane. The sphere membrane is then filled with liquids once the ice has melted. Able to customize the size and membrane thickness of Ooho, Skipping Rocks Lab says that 100 Oohos can be produced in 5 to 10 minutes.
As part of a 7-week trial, Skipping Rocks Lab has partnered with Just Eat to offer Ooho ketchup sachets at 10 restaurants located in London. Skipping Rocks Lab has also served Ooho cocktails and juices at their popup called Ooho Bar.
