Need a cooler to keep your drinks nice and chill on a hot summer day at the beach? If so, let us introduce you to Nutshell, a company that offers sustainably-produced coolers made from coconut. That’s right. Coconut.

More specifically, Nutshell’s coolers are insulated with upcycled coconut husk, which is an agricultural byproduct that would otherwise be burned. The husk itself is purchased from small-scale and independent farmers in the Philippines.

According to Nutshell, they have upcycled over 190,000 coconut husks to date since their founding. By upcycling coconut husks instead of incinerating them, Nutshell has avoided a total of 92,000 CO2 emissions.

“The husk of a coconut is a natural marvel: it protects the water inside, keeping it cool in the heat and safe when it falls,” says Nutshell. “But it’s nothing more than waste for farmers. Billions of leftover husks are burned every year, producing unhealthy smoke and releasing tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.”

“We spent years working alongside farmers and engineers in the Philippines, turning this waste into premium insulation for the Nutshell Cooler.”

In regards to the design of the cooler, the most notable point is that it can be folded flat for easy storage. In addition, it is easy to wash, said to be capable of keeping ice frozen for up to 48hr, and comes with an over-the-shoulder strap for carrying.
