Now, more than ever before, both the footwear and fashion industries are taking very important strides towards incorporating more sustainable and greener manufacturing methods and practices. One such label aggressively joining the cause to save Mother Earth is sportswear giant Nike.
Having already debuted some of the footwear world’s most boundary-pushing sneakers and silhouettes, such as the highly-coveted “Space Hippie” collection, the Beaverton-mainstay is now readying a women’s exclusive Air Force 1 made entirely from sustainable and recycled materials.
Dubbed the Nike Air Force 1 Crater Flyknit, this forthcoming consciously-made model uses all-white Flyknit threads, Nike’s latest technology using recycled materials, to construct its upper. Complementing the sneaker’s tonal look are white suede Swoosh insignias, eyestays, and heel counters that help to elevate the design’s overall look, along with matching lace dubraes and spines.
To shine a light on its initiatives, “Move to Zero” branding embellishes the neon yellow-coloured insoles, referring to Nike’s aim to having a zero-carbon footprint by diverting more than 1 billion plastic bottles per year from landfills to manufacture yarns for new jerseys and uppers for its Flyknit lineage.
Down below the Space Hippie-esque Crater Foam midsole and Nike Grind outsole are made from recycled rubber, foam, and scrap material gathered from Nike’s factory floors, another sustainable material innovation from the brand. The faint multi-coloured speckling effect is created from the blend of reclaimed materials and will be sure to catch the eye of its potential wears and admiring onlookers. Reinforcing the 11% recycled Crater foam midsole are dark grey compositions found at the toe tip and rear.
Nike plans to release this women’s exclusive Air Force 1 Crater Flyknit sometime this spring at select Nike retailers and nike.com. The pair will retail for $110 USD/$ 140 CAD.
