With funding from the Stimuleringsfonds Creatieve Industrie, Dutch designer Nienke Hoogvliet has created the SEA ME collection composed of a chair and side table to showcase the potential of using seaweed with a circular process.
“I think in the future we could live in houses completely made of seaweed,” Hoogvliet told Dezeen. “I wanted to show all the different materials that can be made of seaweed.”
The seating of the chair is made from handwoven seaweed yarn that has been dyed naturally with seaweed. The frame of the chair and side table is a tubular steel framework in a grey-green.
With the emphasis on circularity, the waste generated from the seaweed yarn’s creation process was used to paint the side table’s wooden top.
“In a circular process you have so many possibilities for materials and dyes,” said Hoogvliet.
