Described as “concrete cloth on a roll”, Concrete Canvas is a construction material that is flexible, thin, durable and waterproof.

Seeking to explore the design possibilities of the material, artist and designer Neal Aronowitz has created the Concrete Canvas furniture collection.

“The utilization of Concrete Canvas to sculpture and furniture design has only just begun to be explored,” said Aronowitz.

The first piece created as part of the collection is the Whorl Coffee Table that features a “ribbon-like structure”. Due to the table of this type never been manufactured or produced before, new casting and forming techniques were designed and developed.

“The challenge in the design and construction of this table was to stretch the tensile strength of the material to its limits for aesthetic beauty and interest, seemingly defying gravity,” explained Aronowitz. “At the same time, it needed to maintain its structural integrity as a utilitarian object intended for everyday use.”

With the surface of the table consisting of pigmented cement mortar that is lightly skim coated by hand to a smooth polish, the finish and colours are customizable.

The Concrete Canvas furniture collection also includes Whorl Console, Todos Table, and the Enso Table.
