Sustainability in footwear is often forgotten with many sportswear brands using plastic and other non-recyclable materials to produce their sneakers.
However, New Zealand born brand Allbirds are striving to change this. The brand has just launched its first naturally produced running shoe, which is made completely from renewable materials. Allbirds aimed to create this shoe without compromising on performance or comfort.
The Tree Dasher has been released with the tagline ‘Performance, done naturally’. The lightweight sneaker comes in four colorways; geyser, thunder, cyclone and flame. It has a breathable and flexible upper made from eucalyptus tree fibre and uses laces from reclaimed Allbirds sneakers.
The inside of the shoe is constructed from castor bean oil and merino wool. This is cleverly formed into a heel cushion, designed for maximum comfort. In addition, sugar cane is processed into a substance the brand has coined ‘SweetFoam’. This SweetFoam is used to form the midsole, constructed to support and contour to the foot. The Dasher is made to provide the wearer with the durability and stability you would expect from a high-performance sneaker, however, it refuses to compromise on the comfort levels which the brand is hailed for.
