American fashion brand Naked Cashmere is known for its luxurious, 100% cashmere clothing items for both men and women.
The retailer, which primarily operates online but has one brick and mortar location on Howard Street in New York City, made a major announcement this past Earth Day.
They announced that they were releasing its first-ever collection made entirely out of recycled cashmere. Entitled Cashmere Reborn, the exclusive collection of luxe knitwear is yet another step the brand is taking towards sustainability.
“For us, sustainability is an evolution that we are fully committed to. Like many businesses, we are not perfect, but we constantly strive to improve ourselves for a greener, better future. Our reborn cashmere is GRS (Global Recycle Standard) certified and 100% cashmere,” reads Naked Cashmere’s website.
Each piece in the collection is made from post-consumer yarn that has been respun into 100% cashmere yarn. More specifically, post-consumer cashmere sweaters are washed, taken apart, sorted by fibre length, and then respun to produce 100% recycled cashmere wool yarn.
Other brands that claim to use recycled cashmere do so by taking the fibre from recycled cashmere sweaters and mixing it with wool. Where Naked Cashmere differs is through the process of sorting by fibre length. This allows them to create sustainable styles that are 100% recycled cashmere, rather than a recycled cashmere-wool blend.
In addition to the sustainably-minded materials used to create the Cashmere Reborn collection, all Naked Cashmere items are 100% fair trade certified and 100% cruelty-free. In regards to the former, this means that their herders’ harvest is always purchased in its entirety, regardless of the market, and herders are paid in advance and enjoy regulated working conditions.
Further, Naked Cashmere’s goats are free-roaming, except for once a year when they come in for grooming. During grooming, they are hand combed gently, and the topcoat of fur is always left intact to protect them against sunburns, the wind, and the weather. The brand has even taken a pledge to uphold what they refer to as “the 5 freedoms of animal welfare”. These freedoms include freedom from hunger, thirst, and malnutrition, freedom from discomfort, freedom from pain, injury, and disease, freedom from fear and distress, and lastly, freedom to express normal patterns of behaviour.
Pieces in the Cashmere Reborn collection range in price from $100 to $245 USD, and feature everything from lounge shorts and pants to cozy hoodies and camis. All items are available in three colours: rose pink, navy blue, and white. Currently, Naked Cashmere’s Cashmere Reborn edit only features women’s pieces.
