In collaboration with London based startup BIOHM, Design Studio Nir Meiri has created a lampshade that is made with mycelium.

Part of an ongoing material research project on the vegetative part of a fungus called mycelium, organic and synthetic waste was used to grow mycelium in a controlled condition, which was then used as lamp shades for the project titled Mycelium Lights.

“Mushrooms or fungi are truly wondrous organisms with significant untapped potential,” said Nir Meiri in a statement. “Mycelium consumes organic and synthetic waste to grow into different shapes and different types of waste alter its properties. This could have highly significant implications for ridding our planet from the mountains and islands of synthetic waste.”
