At the Mobile World Congress (MWC) Barcelona, Microsoft has unveiled the latest version of their mixed reality headset called HoloLens 2.

“This is a tremendously exciting time for Microsoft, our partners, our customers, the computing industry and indeed the world,” said Microsoft Azure Corporate Vice President Julia White. “The virtually limitless computing power and capability of the cloud combined with increasingly intelligent and perceptive edge devices embedded throughout the physical world create experiences we could only imagine a few short years ago.”

Said to be twice as immersive, HoloLens 2 features an improved field of view and a new visual display system that makes the holograms “even more vibrant and realistic”.

With Microsoft stating that they have “completed refreshed” how users interact with holograms in Hololens 2, a new time-of-flight depth sensor alongside a built-in AI with semantic understanding enables users to directly manipulate the holograms with the same instinctual interactions of physical objects.

Featuring eye-tracking sensors that “make interacting with holograms even more natural”, users will also be able to securely log into the device with Windows Hello enterprise-grade authentication via iris recognition.

Described as being three times more comfortable with a more balanced center of gravity, HoloLens 2 has a new dial-in fit system that account for the variable proportions of human heads.

Alongside HoloLens 2, Microsoft has also unveiled a new HoloLens Customization Program that enables various sectors and fields to create HoloLens that are best suited for their environment.

As part of the program, Microsoft has unveiled a new hard hat combined with HoloLens 2 called Trimble XR10.

Embracing the principles of open stores, open browsers and open developer platforms for HoloLens, Microsoft as part of demonstrating their commitment to the principles has announced that a prototype of the Firefox Reality browser by Mozilla and Unreal Engine 4 support is “coming to HoloLens”.

“We are entering a new era of computing, one in which the digital world goes beyond two-dimensional screens and enters the three-dimensional world,” said Microsoft in a statement. “This new collaborative computing era will empower us all to achieve more, break boundaries and work together with greater ease and immediacy in 3D.
