German luxury automaker Mercedes-Benz has unveiled its latest concept electric vehicle (EV) called VISION EQXX that is purpose-made for range and efficiency.
Boasting a capability of 1,000 km (620 mi) on just a single charge at an energy consumption rate of 10 kWh per 100 km (62 mi), Mercedes-Benz says that the VISION EQXX is ideal for long road trips.
To achieve this exceptional range, an efficiency of 95% from the battery to wheels was realized thanks to Mercedes-Benz’s new electric drivetrain designed and built in-house.
In addition, the concept EV is fitted with 117 solar cells on the roof. On a sunny day with blue skies, up to 25 km of extra range can be enjoyed.
“Driven by the idea of zero impact on our planet and a highly responsible use of green energy, we inspired our engineers to go above and beyond,” reads Mercedes-Benz’s website about the motivation for investing and developing EVs. “The VISION EQXX is the result of a mission we set ourselves to break through technological barriers across the board and to lift energy efficiency to new heights.”
Other notable aspects of the VISION EQXX include the use of recycled and plant-based materials for the interior. For example, recycled PET bottles are found in the floor area and door trim. UBQ material, a sustainable plastic substitute made from household and municipal landfill waste, was also utilized. As for plant-based materials, Mercedes-Benz made use of mushrooms, bamboo, cactus, and vegan silk.
“Working with these innovative, sustainable materials to design the interior of the VISION EQXX was a hugely liberating and exhilarating experience,” says Gorden Wagener, chief design officer of Mercedes-Benz. “They open up completely new avenues of creativity, and the visual and tactile finishes are exquisite. The upscale feel of the interior through the use of ambient lighting as well as silver, rose-gold and gloss black accents is a highly progressive interpretation of modern luxury for the all-electric era.”
