Made up of feminine pieces that feature flowy silhouettes, ruffled details and delicate necklines, new fashion brand Valani‘s inaugural collection is inspired by the motto of “Lighter Living.”
Founded by entrepreneur, lifelong vegan, and philanthropist Vanni Leung, Valani is rooted in what Leung sees as the interconnectedness of all living things. Leung believes that plants, animals, and humans are intertwined and we must honour and love each other if we’re going to save the planet.
These guiding principles are what led to the creation of Valani’s line of fully biodegradable clothing. Every single item in the collection is made from a plant-based material that can be composted when it reaches the end of its life, such as hemp fibre, antibacterial Tencel, and banana silk. Further, all items were dyed with low-impact, non-toxic dyes, ensuring the smallest carbon footprint possible.
Beyond the materials used, Valani sought to create a collection of wardrobe staples that was not only eco-friendly but also entirely seasonless. Rather than looking forward to the season ahead, they instead chose to focus on the generation ahead. This translated to colours and silhouettes that are appropriate for wearing year-round.
In addition, Valani is committed to sustainable, low waste packaging, which includes the use of organic cotton labels, straw paper hang tags, hemp and jute twine, recycled tissue paper, and recycled boxes and cards.
While acknowledging that it’s almost impossible for a fashion brand to be 100% sustainable, Valani has sought to be as circular as possible. For example, to minimize fabric waste, their patterns are cut strategically for the highest level of efficiency. Any leftover fabric or fabric scraps are repurposed into scrunchies, also available on their website, or used as filling for toys, pillows, or other crafts. Finally, anything left over at the very end of this process is recycled.
