American retailer Madewell has just released a new athleisure collection.
Dubbed MWL (an acronym for “make weekends longer” and a play on the brand’s name), the collection is made up of basic styles ranging from t-shirts and hoodies to ribbed pants and sweatpants. MWL is designed so that the pieces in the collection can be paired together.
While the styles in the collection are just as trendy as anything else sold by Madewell, where this new athleisure collection differs is in the materials used. Every single fabric used to create MWL has a sustainable component.
Take the MWL Superbrushed Easygoing Sweatshirt for example. This crewneck is made of 66% Lenzing Modal, 28% REPREVE recycled polyester, and 6% spandex. The Lenzing Modal used comes from sustainable beech wood, while the polyester was created out of recycled plastic water bottles.
This push towards sustainability is part of Madewell’s wider environmental goals that were published earlier this year. By 2030, the brand aims to be fully carbon neutral, and by 2025, they plan to have 100 percent of their materials be sustainably sourced and free from virgin plastic.
